What is Counselling?

Counselling can be a space whereby a person is enabled to explore issues or concerns that may have troubled them for long or short periods of time. Deciding to see a counsellor does not mean there is something wrong with you, but simply, that you have decided to do something positive about your well being. Counselling gives you the opportunity to step back, find time to view your situation, consider your choices and move in a direction that allows you to live your life in the best way you can.

Our counselling service is based predominately on a Person-Centred model of counselling, whereby we believe that everyone is ultimately the expert on his or her life, with the capacity to be self-directing, to seek change within themselves, to grow and to reach their potential as a human being.

To enable this, we aim to provide a counselling environment where the Person-Centred core conditions, or characteristics, of empathy, unconditional positive regard and congruence or 'realness' in the Counsellor are deeply held. Where the client feels accepted and understood and where the Counsellor is a genuine and authentic human being with a strong commitment to the ethos of the Person-Centred Approach.

The aim of person-centered therapy is to enable a person to trust in their inner feelings and experiences as valuable sources of information for making decisions; to be more self-accepting and accepting of others; to feel more positive and comfortable in their relationships with others; to have an increased openness to new experiences and new ways of thinking about life.
